As the Chinese proverb goes, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” and we feel the same is true for entrepreneurship. It’s truly a journey– sometimes more like a roller coaster ride– to really take a concept and turn it into a living, breathing business. Somehow, along the way, it’s the learning curves and determination that carry a concept from a to z.
About two years ago we set out to design, manufacturer, and sell functional handbags primarily for women on the go. It’s been a packed journey full of designing, prototyping, learning from experts, and growing each stage of the way. For those of you who have followed our business development, you know we started designing functional handbags (namely tote bags) and trimming them with textiles from around the globe. We have always loved the idea of creating products that do good for the world and tell a story– in our case– a global story connecting people and places.
As we went forward with the tote bag prototyping and manufacturing, it quickly became evident that the risks were very steep. In short, the main risks we were up against include manufacturing costs and prototyping limitations. We took a step back, and we wanted to take lessons learn to tweak our business and business model. It was back to the drawing board.
Still inspired by global design, we started playing with how to really make the idea of global storytelling stand out. We dusted off the sewing machine. International packages with fabrics from Argentina to Ghana arrived, and we began to play with different concepts. That’s when the ah-ha moment hit… why not design clutches?
Today we are getting ready to unveil laurenoliviaco.com. All of our products are now clutches, box clutches, covered in textiles sourced from around the globe. We have had fun testing our products out and about and have loved receiving feedback as we’ve refined the business model. Thank you.
All of that said, we are even more excited to share that our materials are sourced from talented artisans and businesses around the globe, and each handbag is hand assembled by our partners in Southern California! We feel that the idea of globally inspired clutches fit for a gala or afternoon tea and adorned in a boutique shop really is the right fit. As we look back, it’s so true that any journey begins with a single step. We are thankful to toast to that and to all that the future holds!
